Sensing the landscape – Bernie Dignam & Olly van der Flier
The character of any landscape is the interaction of natural forces, combined with the impact of human actions upon it. Natural forces have moulded the mountains, fields, rocks, rivers, lakes and coastline: the human factors include buildings, ruins, farming practices, turf-cutting and land boundaries– these elements give Connemara its unique identity.
Bernie Dignam responds to her surroundings through a contemporary lens using various ancient techniques. Her textiles aim to capture the splendour of nature & drama in the landscape. Her printmaking facilitates the articulation of personal, cultural and environmental issues.
Olly van der Flier has endeavoured to capture and record in ink and wash some of the crumbling and abandoned houses and buildings around Ballyconneely, Bunowen and Doonloughan. Some drawings are accompanied by stories of people who once lived there.
Opening Friday September 20th at 6pm.
Where: Christ Church
