Lelia Ní Chathmhaoil
Lelia Ní Chathmhaoil is a multidisciplinary artist from Indreabhán in South Conamara, living and working in a bilingual community. She holds a degree in Art and Design from ATU. When she first arrived in the area, she worked as a handweaver, and the beauty of the landscape quickly found its way into her work and continues to inspire her.
Her work is deeply rooted in her surroundings, with each piece reflecting the environment and our place within it. She is particularly interested in how we support and contribute to our environment, whether in nurturing or discouraging ways. In the area where she lives, there is a noticeable lack of trees. To address this, she successfully created her own wild woodland.
In recent years, a fungus has appeared in the area, slowly destroying the ash trees. While living, the ash were beautiful, stately trees, supporting a diverse range of ground flora and fauna. As they slowly die, branches fall, and open spaces emerge in their stead. Her work is a homage to the ash trees (Fuinseog/ Fraxinus excelsior).
Opening Thursday September 19th at 5.30pm.
