2026 celebrates 100 years of Irish radio from the opening night of 2RN on the First of January 1926 through decades of Raidió Éireann and from the 1960s to today, RTÉ. There has been a close and important connection between broadcasting and traditional Irish music over all that time, with side-by-side developments and growth in the two parallel worlds. Broadcasting started out with a skeleton staff, primitive equipment and low listenership and grew gradually to become a nationwide station of central significance in Irish life.
Our Musical Heritage and The Long Note matched and mapped what was happening in traditional music and provided encouragement and valuable stimulation. External factors such as nationwide electrification, the arrival of magnetic tape and even political events also had a bearing on how the story unfolded over time. All this will be the subject of this illustrated talk by Peter Browne.
