Tommy Sands

Tommy Sands, the legendary singer, songwriter and social activist from County Down, is renowned for his powerful songs of peace and social justice. From his early days with the influential Sands Family, he has brought Irish music to audiences from Carnegie Hall to Moscow.
His songs, including ‘There Were Roses’, and ‘Daughters and Sons’, have been recorded by artists such as Joan Baez, Dolores Keane and Dick Gaughan, and are taught in schools around the world. Praised by Seamus Heaney and Pete Seeger, Sands has been called “the most powerful songwriter in Ireland” by Sing Out magazine.
A tireless advocate for reconciliation, Sands has worked with prisoners in Nevada and schoolchildren across Northern Ireland, using music to bridge divides. During the Good Friday Agreement Talks, his spontaneous performance with children and Lambeg drummers was described by Seamus Mallon as “a defining moment in the P eace Process”.
Through song, Sands continues to champion hope, compassion and understanding across generations and borders.
