The Luminosa String Orchestra was launched in November 2018, the brainchild of Lucy Hayward O’Leary, now the executive director, and cellist Nicola Geddes. Since its inception, Luminosa has delivered stunning concerts in Galway and Cork. Inspired by the Italian word for brilliant light, Luminosa reflects the orchestra’s vision of illuminating the classical music scene with exceptional talent.
Luminosa delights audiences with highquality performances and an innovative curatorial approach. Their concerts showcase lesser-known works and pieces by Irish composers alongside classical string repertoire staples. By commissioning new Irish classical works and curating themed programmes, Luminosa creates meaningful musical experiences that resonate with both new and established audiences.
Led by Paul Ezergailis, concertmaster of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and featuring section leaders from the renowned ConTempo quartet, Luminosa’s musicians are highly skilled practitioners of classical, romantic, and early music. Their compelling and powerful performances offer a balm for the soul, especially in challenging times.
