Talk by Kathleen Villiers-Tuthill. The late 19th century was a turbulent and transformative time in Connemara, shaped by sectarian tension, crop failure, agrarian unrest, new infrastructure, and grassroots enterprise. Historian and writer Kathleen Villiers-Tuthill brings this pivotal era to life through the story of Fr Thomas Flannery, curate of Clifden and later parish priest of Carna from 1878 to 1891.
A tireless advocate for his parishioners, Fr Tom became deeply involved in the major social movements of the day. His work earned the admiration of visiting dignitaries and drew the support of English philanthropists keen to aid his efforts in the West of Ireland.
