NightVisiting Songs and stories from the Hearth

September 23, 2024 | 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm
€20

Lisa Lambe, an internationally acclaimed Irish folk singer and actor, introduces her new project ‘NightVisiting’, inspired by her work with the National Folklore Collection and her recent M.A. in Irish Folklore. First commissioned by The National Famine Museum in Strokestown, County Roscommon, this project reconnects us with the social role of night-time house visits in preserving oral traditions and folklore.

Lambe collaborates with renowned traditional musicians and local contributors to create unique performances tailored to each venue. ‘NightVisiting’ celebrates the old songs, stories, and tunes shared around the hearth, highlighting themes from tender love songs to songs of loss and longing.
In different regions of Ireland, these night visits are known as ‘Bothaìntaìocht’ or ‘Cuairtaìocht’ in the west, ‘Scoraìochting’ in the southern counties, and visits to the Rambling House elsewhere. The project brings audiences back to a time when the hearth was the centre of social life, before the electrification of Ireland in the late 1940s shifted gatherings to ballrooms, public houses, and dance halls.
‘NightVisiting’ is a celebration and reimagining of these traditional nights of sharing songs and stories, making it a mustsee event.
