Ireland 1926: taking stock with Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh
September 25 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
€10
How did the new Irish Free State fare in the first decade after its establishment in 1922? Was it an increasingly conservative and confessional state or an exemplary (and in European terms exceptional) model of responsible, democratic state-building ? In what ways did life change for the ordinary citizen? What was the impact of Partition and what new insights can we find in the 1926 census data? These are among the questions to be considered in Professor Ó Tuathaigh’s talk.
Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh is Professor Emeritus in History at the University of Galway. He has contributed to public history, as a broadcaster and lecturer to academic and general audiences, over many decades.
