Placenames in Ireland hold a rich history and significant meanings, acting as unique repositories of knowledge and progressive sites of cultural co-creation. Dr. Nessa Cronin’s lecture explores the bilingual legacy of Irish placenames and their continued relevance in today’s digitally mediated world, especially during a time of climate and ecological crisis.
Focusing on the western regions, which cartographer and writer Tim Robinson called the “ABC of Earthwonders” (Oileáin Árann, the Burren, and Conamara), Dr. Cronin highlights the essential roles of placenames. These names serve as portals to “ancestor culture,” preserving historical and cultural knowledge (place-marking) and fostering ongoing creation and interpretation of cultural identity (place-making). She speculates on how placenames can help us re-imagine more collective and hopeful ecosocial futures by connecting our past to what Elise Boulding called our “200-year present.”
Dr Cronin’s lecture offers a profound exploration of how placenames, far from being mere geographical markers, are vital cultural assets that help us navigate and respond to contemporary environmental and social challenges.
