BOOK LAUNCH BARAGWANATH Stories from the great Cornish Diaspora by John Baragwanath

Ireland and Cornwall share a common feature in the way that emigration has shaped the
world view of its peoples. The economy of Cornwall suffered a devastating blow in the
middle of the 19th century with the collapse of mining – its most important industry – creating
massive unemployment, resulting in massive emigration to the four corners of the globe.
The Baragwanath families, mainly miners, were part of this; they settled in Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa, North and South America.
Remarkably, nearly all of those bearing the Baragwanath name today can trace their lineage back to a single ancestor – John Baragwanath (1590–1660) of the village of Towednack in West Cornwall.
