Clifden Surrealism – Corner Gallery, Station House
In this 100th anniversary of the Surrealist Manifesto, we bring together four exemplary regional and national talents within this art and cultural movement, Gavin Lavelle, Gosia Kamieniecka, Joe Boske and Suzie Sullivan. Their individual explorations and expression of the subconscious encourage us to liberate our thoughts and language around the representation of the everyday and fantastical. With four very distinct perspectives, we can expect to be challenged and engaged through the random and unpredictable.
Gavin Lavelle is primarily a painter in acrylic on wood or canvas, who for some time now has been using collage in his work. He often begins a piece with a mental template of experiences and influences.
Gosia Kamieniecka’s “Cabbage Lady” invites viewers to embrace the beauty of the ordinary while cultivating a vision of femininity intertwined with love and ecological consciousness.
Suzie Sullivan’s ‘It’s all in the Balance’ is a new body of work that explores the perspective of combining sculpture with motion. These sculptures take on various forms of a fantasy world of nature and the universe, some represent the changing of the seasons and the dispersal of pods and seeds, inspired by the drawings of Arthur Rackham.
Joe Boske’s humorous and surrealist work has been indelibly etched into the imagination of the arts culture of the West over five decades through his illustrative work, publishing and musical composition.
